VANDERSLICE HALL

Kansas City, Missouri | 22,683 SF | Historic Renovation

Originally built as a residence in 1895 by the prominent business and civic leader August Meyer, Vanderslice Hall was gifted to the Kansas City Art Institute in 1927 by Howard Vanderslice. The building has since served as the Administration Building for the college and is the physical and emotional centerpiece of the campus. We are currently in the middle of a multi-phase project to completely renovate the exterior and interior of the building, restoring it to its original glory and adding functionality to the program.

IRVING BUILDING

Kansas City, Missouri | 30,000 SF | Master Plan/Addition/Adaptive Reuse

KCAI approached our firm with a need for two general-purpose classrooms to be completed on a limited schedule and budget. Through deep analysis, an underutilized courtyard presented a unique opportunity. By inserting classrooms into the existing courtyard, the budget and schedule goals could be achieved through reductions in building envelope and systems. The courtyard's location also allowed us to activate a prominent campus edge through a large storefront, creating a visual dialogue between the screen and classroom. Mobile furniture, suspended power reels and tack board lined walls allow uses ranging from digital arts classrooms to painting studios.

DODGE PAINTING BUILDING

Kansas City, Missouri | 34,000 SF | Mater Plan/New Building/Tenant Improvements

The Dodge painting building incorporated two existing 1960’s wings to create a new facility. The building is oriented toward the campus, helping to define the centralized green space with faculty teaching spaces and academic galleries that showcase art. State-of-the-art studio spaces integrate natural and artificial light, highlighting display areas and systems. The Dodge Painting Building uses 73.3% less energy compared to an average college academic building.
