Topeka, Kansas | 106,000 SF | Expansion And Renovation

The existing Henderson Learning Center, originally constructed in 1968 after a tornado affected much of the campus, was designed with a minimal amount of glazing and a solid concrete structure. Currently home to the School of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences, the building's renovation seeks to enhance its connection to the outdoors by increasing natural light and offering more views of the surrounding environment. The project also aims to accommodate the growing needs of both academic programs.

Key design principles for the renovation and expansion include fostering increased interaction between faculty and students, creating dynamic social and study spaces for students, ensuring equal representation for each department, and elevating the experience of both entry and movement throughout the building. The goal is to create exceptional learning environments that maximize access to daylight while supporting collaboration.

The updated floor plan will strengthen connections between individuals, the building, and the campus, while the redesigned classrooms will enhance the learning experience. Adjacent meeting spaces will facilitate spontaneous collaboration between students and faculty, further enriching the academic community.
